The place where the Mureº sees the daylight was named “Izvoru Mureºului” after the Hungarian “Marosfö”. Izvoru Mureºului is a mountain spot and a permanent mountain resort, located in Harghita county, by the Hasmasul Mare mountain feet (1793 m), on southern flank of the Muntele Negru (Black Mountain) at 1538 m; there where is the easiest pass from the Ciuc low spot to the Giurgeului low spot, trough the Greci gate (891m altitude). The resort is located on the route DN 12 at 38 Km from Miercurea Ciuc and 19 Km from Gheorgheni, on the ridge of Mureº and Olt pound. Izvorul Mureº is a specific location that has his houses along the national route, a recreation centre for youth, being and very appreciates one. The location is composed from three hamlets: the upstream one known as STATIUNEA, the middle known as TINCANI (almost al the inhabitants are named TINCA) and the downstream part known as BOTENI. After the latest census survey in 1992, the location has 801 inhabitants. The origin of the name MUREª comes from the Celtic words mour = marsh and ach = moor, meaning marshy. The German name of MIERESCH is very close to this archaic form, in the linguist’s opinion.
